When I started my journey as a “Virtual Assistant” I had no idea what that meant. I, truly, put together a Facebook post with the caption “Who Needs A Virtual Assistant?” after hearing that a friend of a friend of mine was starting her own career as one. (If you want to find out more about how Mills & Mae Services started and what that Facebook post led to, head to our About Page).
So, anyway, I was like you. I had no clue what a Virtual Assistant was, but I knew it had something to do with working from home for someone else and that sounded good to me! Now that I have been in this industry for a while, I now understand the depth that being a Virtual Assistant (there are many other names for it) really means.
n this article, you will find some of the answers to some of the questions I had when I first started. Remember this is not an exhaustive list, and if any of this strikes up questions, I would love to meet with you one-on-one…just head over to the Book Now page.
All the Names
Like I mentioned above, I really had no idea what a Virtual Assistant was when I started. I now understand the biggest thing about Virtual Assistant work is that it is a terrible name for it, but there are not many great options.
Every business owner has their own preconceived notions about what a Virtual Assistant, or Executive Assistant, or Administrative Assistant does, so, at the end of the day, you can go by any of these titles and so many tasks, projects, and passions will fall under them. Therefore, you could call this role:
- Virtual Assistant
- Remote Assistant
- Admin Assistant
- Executive Assistant
- And more
For the purpose of consistency, we at Mills & Mae Services refer to these roles as Remote Assistant jobs.

Basic Definition of a Remote Assistant
Now that I have made the water muddy with names, let’s talk about what even is this so-called Remote Assistant position?
There honestly is not one way to define a Remote Assistant. That is why Mills & Mae’s tagline is Creating Order Out of Chaos. Basically, a Remote Assistant completes a wide variety of tasks for a business owner, in order to allow them to be opened up to focus more on the actual passion projects of said business.
Remote assistants work to support the dreams and goals of a business by utilizing their own passions and skills to complete tasks in an efficient and effective way.
Tasks and Skills
When you work out of your passions, the rest flows easily. So, pause for a moment, and ask yourself…What are you passionate about? What do you love doing? (For some, these answers come quickly and for others this might take some thought and intentionality).
Tasks might include:
- PR/Marketing strategizing and/or implementation
- Social media management
- Content creation
- Email management
- Calendar organization and scheduling
- Invoicing and basic bookkeeping
- And so much more
At the end of the day, a business owner will outsource tasks and projects that do not fit their skill set or passions but are necessary for the expansion of the business. That is where you come in!
Industries in Need
Last brainstorming task for this article…You now know what a Remote Assistant is and what tasks and projects you could take on. Now, we need to talk about what type of business owner or industry needs this type of assistant work.
Looking at the list below, which industry are you most interested in serving?
- Real Estate
- Construction
- Counseling / Therapy
- Healthcare
- Marketing / Advertising
- Media
- Small Business
- Travel
- Education
- Nonprofit Organizations
Best part…all of the businesses that Mills & Mae Services works with are US-based. And, thanks to the way technology makes our world a whole lot smaller, you do not have to live in the same state or even the same time zone as the business owner.
